Kindergarten

The kindergarten curriculum is slightly different from school to school. For specific information regarding the class structure and curriculum, parents may contact their child's kindergarten teacher directly; however, there is a set of uniform milestones put in place to make sure each child is prepared to move onto first grade. Each kindergarten student will be taught the following before moving up:

  • How to recognize and write their own name, address and phone number

  • The basic location of their home, school and other community landmarks

  • Follow class guidelines; including appropriate behavior and classroom etiquette

  • Recognize the days of the week and the names of the months and seasons in order

  • Recognize, write and distinguish the sounds of the letters of the alphabet and some simple words

  • Actively listen and participate in class activities in an appropriate manner

  • Make general observations and recognize events happening around them

Elementary Education Resources: Kindergarten

First Grade

The first grade curriculum helps to set the groundwork for more advanced education. First grade teachers work with their students to help them develop the skills needed throughout their academic career. The following are a few things that are taught in first grade:

  • Continual development of vocabulary and reading comprehension skills

  • Recognition of basic sentence structure and punctuation

  • An understanding of basic math concepts, including addition, subtraction, simple division and multiplication.

  • General social studies concepts as they relate to the community, including recognizing law enforcement and other community officials.

  • Recognition and basic understanding of animal life and the geographic world around them.

  • Developing an appreciate for the arts, including basic music and visual art

  • Understanding the importance of working with others to achieve a common goal

  • Athletic involvement through active participation in physical education

  • General health and well being, including oral health

Resources for Elementary Language Arts: First Grade

Second Grade

In second grade, students will continue to develop and recognize the world around them. Educators will assist in the students' understanding and application of class material in everyday life and encourage students throughout the learning process. The development of reading comprehension and writing skills is expounded upon students will begin to take responsibility for basic material outside of the classroom. The following concepts will be taught to all second grade students:

  • Grade appropriate reading and reading comprehension

  • Further development of writing skills, including sentence structure and directional writing

  • Effective communication in a group setting

  • The development of math skills, including probability and basic fractions

  • The development of scientific understanding, including the life cycle and wildlife habitats

  • Understanding major events in history and the basic function of government as it applies to the community

  • Recognition and memorization of age appropriate songs and develop an understanding of rhyming

Third Grade

Third grade focuses not only on education, but the development of an appreciation of the education process and understanding of why education is so important. Third grade students will learn and develop the following:

  • An appreciation for reading and an understanding of its importance in academics and nonacademic life

  • How to communication the events within a story

  • The difference between fiction and nonfiction works

  • Writing skills involved in letter writing, narratives and basic explanations

  • How to construct and organize writing in paragraph form.

  • The development of math skills, including: measuring, geometry, fractions, and multiplication/division

  • Understanding the environment the different animal and plant live that inhabit specific areas of the world

  • Basic U.S. History, including the government structure and the Native American presence in the New World.

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade students will work to develop many different skills. Connecting experiences and education is utilized to help explain advanced concepts, including those in science and social studies. The following will be covered in the fourth grade curriculum:

  • How to utilize and reference books in the library

  • Understanding root words and how they can be used to develop subsequent words

  • Contextual understanding of reading material

  • Math concepts relating to both whole numbers and fractions

  • Understanding and the application of fractions, decimals and prime numbers

  • Word problems and using math skills in daily activities

  • Recognizing and comparing complex systems

  • The development and changes to the Earth over time

  • Basic concepts of energy and simple machines

Fourth Grade Math Standards

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders will be expected to work hard and will be held accountable for class material and academic performance. Challenging students with more complex concepts and class material will help to prepare them to leave the elementary school setting and move up to higher grades. In order to succeed academically, students will need to utilize their developing listening, directional and presentation skills. Students will be held responsible for the following material:

  • Analyzing and understanding the characters, setting and plot of reading material

  • Understand the purpose of reading and writing as it relates to an author

  • Develop and understanding and utilize proper grammar and spelling in all aspects of education

  • Develop and understanding and appreciation of poetry, stories and song writing

  • Solve complex word problems using a variety of math skills

  • Understand and apply the use of fractions, percents and decimals

  • Real-world application of measurement and money exchange

  • Understanding the basic connection between the Earth and other scientific theories, including gravity, the solar system, weather, atmosphere and matter.

  • Understand the evolution of society from the colonial period to modern day.

Fifth Grade Social Studies Resources

Sixth Grade

Sixth grade is an important time for students and their parents. Students will transfer to the middle school and subjects will be taught be separate instructors specializing in that area of study. The following will be taught to all sixth grade students:

  • The further development of math skills and practical application. Exponents will be introduced, as well as advanced geometry and basic algebra

  • Research writing and reporting will be an important focus in language arts/English. Students will be help responsible for writing and presenting book reports and other presentation to their class.

  • Science will generally focus on life science, Earth science and physical science. Students will learn about general biology and the human body.

  • Social students will cover material including early humans and the raise and fall of early civilizations.

Seventh Grade

Seventh grade covers a plethora of academic material and builds upon the students understand ing of science, math, social studies and language arts/English. Students will be held accountable for the following:

  • Producing written material in each academic subject utilizing proper mechanics, spelling and grammar

  • Development of oral presentation techniques

  • Understanding intermediate geometry; including angles, planes, and multidimensional objects

  • Understanding and applying statistics and how they are gathered

  • physical science and the relation of matter to the world

  • Understanding and implementing the scientific method

  • World history and the emergence of the US as a world power.

Eighth Grade

This is the student's final year before entering into high school. Educator will challenge students academically and set a new standard of excellence to help them make the final transition into high school. Students will be responsible for the following material:

  • Understand and implement writing skills to construct position papers and comparative analysis

  • Read and participate in class discussion of literature

  • Understand and develop and appreciation for the US Constitution and the rights of US citizens

  • Recognize and understand the importance of key events throughout US history

  • understand the law making process and how a bill becomes a law

Ninth Grade

This is the students first year in high school. A variety of new subjects are introduced into the eduction process once students enter high school. In addition to the required course material, the following will be added to your child's curriculum:

  • Mechanics/shop

Ninth Grade Resources

Tenth Grade – Twelfth Grade

Students will be held accountable for advanced science and math concepts, a deeper understanding of literature and an active and participatory knowledge of the function of US government processes and how the US relates to the rest of the world. In addition to general course material, students will have the opportunity to take advantage of the following academic electives:
